In the gun safe industry, it’s a general rule that convenience often comes at the price of safety. You might have a safe with a biometric fingerprint scanner or Simplex lock that can open in less than a second, but that’s not to say that it can’t do the same for someone else as well. Biometric technology isn’t always perfect, and fancy gimmicks don’t necessarily guarantee an added level of security. But with the behemoth that is the Stack-On 16 Rifle Gun Safe, with its 16 gun capacity, fully carpeted interior, and reliable combination lock, you can get the best of both.
What We Liked
- Design - If nothing else, the design of this Stack-On is enough to justify its purchase. The interior is spacious enough to fit 16 full length rifles with relative ease. Although you may have problems accessing some of the rifles that are placed deep within the safe, there are always customizations available to you as a gun safe owner, including retractable racks and shelves. The housing is also built with superb quality, with tiny door gaps and a heavy door construction that should prevent even the most determined burglar from gaining access. The safe also features a combination lock that may take some getting used to, but is definitely reliable.
- Drill-resistant solid steel plate behind lock - One of the things we loved the most about this safe is the drill-resistant steel plate behind the combination lock. One of the most common ways for burglars to break into safes is by drilling through the lock to penetrate the interior wall and release the bolts inside the door, which is much more difficult when there’s a steel plate behind the lock.
- Organizers and shelves offer better space utilization - This Stack-On safe includes an organizer and shelves that hang both on the interior part of the door and at the top of the interior housing. Although space is somewhat limited, these organizers are particularly useful for ammunition, modifications, and other peripheral items.
- Carpeted interior - This Stack-On safe features a fully carpeted interior, which is useful for preventing unwanted scratches on your rifles. The carpet isn’t any fancy material, but is certainly a welcome addition to the safe, especially considering that this safe is meant to hold the entirety of your gun collection.
What Needs Improvement
- Not fireproof - Considering the amount of firearms that are meant to be placed inside this safe, we were a little disappointed that the housing isn’t fireproof. Of course, the chances of a dedicated burglar entering your home or business trying to torch your safe open may be slim to none, but safes of this caliber typically do include fireproofing. Not a big deal in our opinion, but it’s worth mentioning.
- Tedious entry - Combination locks aren’t for everyone, and there is somewhat of a learning curve if you’re used to operating safes with biometric fingerprint scanners and digital keypads. Surely, safety is paramount when it comes to safes, but the time it takes to open the safe can mean the difference between life and death. If you’re a gun owner who is anticipating a stress situation, you might have a hard time using this safe, even with a fully memorized combination.
- No interior lighting - For a safe that can store 16 guns, it’s somewhat disappointing that there isn’t integrated interior lighting included with it. Even in a bright room, you might have a hard time access some of the items placed deeper within the safe because of the depth of the safe itself. However, this is a minor concern since lighting is a popular and relatively inexpensive customization for gun safe owners.
Bottom Line
If you’re a true gun enthusiast looking for a reliable safe at an affordable price, it doesn’t get much better than the Stack-On 16 Rifle Safe. It might not look or feel as fancy without a biometric fingerprint scanner or digital keypad, but it’ll certainly do the job if you have a good amount of firearms you want to keep out of unwanted hands. The overall construction of the safe is outstanding, and you won’t have to worry about any burglars with crowbars getting inside while you’re not around. The combination lock might be a little tedious to use at first, but it shouldn’t present any problems throughout the entire lifespan of the safe. Certainly, this safe wouldn’t be practical during a stress situation, but if you’re simply trying to keep your things locked away securely, the Stack-On is one of the best home gun safes on the market.
